Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said on Tuesday that the National Democratic Alliance government was committed to building a network of roads with better quality and connectivity, which would play a pivotal role in boosting the country's economy.
Dedicating the 43-km stretch of the first phase of Ahmedabad-Vadodara expressway on the outskirts of the city, he told a large gathering, "We want to create such a network of roads in the country whereby transportation of people as well as goods can be carried out without any obstacles."
"Why can't we construct good roads?" the PM wondered, assuring that it is the government's dream to see that one can travel from Kashmir to Kanyakumari without any obstacles, referring to the ambitious Rs 58,000 crore (Rs 580 billion) Golden Quadrilateral project that links the four metro cities.
"Once a highway is constructed, petrol pumps would come up, then a small shop will be started nearby...and slowly the areas will be bustling with business activity," he said.
Vajpayee said, "Acquisition of land will no more be a problem, as in the past when people went to courts and got a stay order on highways passing through their plots."
