Andhra Pradesh plans mini pharma cities

With a view to boost the vibrant pharma industry in the state, Andhra Pradesh government plans to set up mini-pharma cities.

The government is considering some locations in Medak, Nalgonda and Mahbuhnagar districts to develop mini pharma cities, Lakshmi Parthasarathy, state principal secretray department of industries and commerce told the delegates at India-Africa, ASEAN and GCC Pharma & Health Conference in Hyderabad on Thursday.

"We have been getting many requests from the industry to provide infrastructure near Hyderabad," she said.

Inviting investments from foreign investors in the pharma sector, Parthasarathy said the pharma city coming up in Visakhapatnam would be an ideal location.

"Already major drug companies like Matrix Labs have started work. By November 2006, we will be able to offer full infrastructure," she added.

The state government had already taken up the issue of loss to pharma industry in the state in view of tax sops being provided to hilly states like Himachal Pradesh. "We have already represented the matter before the Rajya Sabha Secretariat," she said.

Pharma market in Andhra Pradesh is valued at $1.6 million and about one-third of the country's total bulk drug production takes place in the state out of which over 60 per cent is exported. There are about 750 large and medium pharma industries in the state.
