The first round of the advertising battle that begins in earnest at the onset of summer every year between cola majors PepsiCo and Coca-Cola seems to have been won by PepsiCo.

With fresh advertising campaigns for the season, brand Pepsi had the highest consumer recall in the country during the quarter ended March 31, 2005, according to a survey conducted by consumer research firm Indicus Analytics. Rival Coke ranked 12th in consumer recall. The brand moved up three places from 15 during the previous quarter.

The survey, called Consumer Tracker, was conducted in the second half of March and polled nearly 34,000 consumers.

The Tata brand had the second highest consumer recall followed by Sony, LG, and Maruti. Colgate and Cadbury made a comeback in the top 10, displacing Samsung and Nokia. Tata, Maruti and Raymond continue to be the three Indian brands in the top 10.

According to Indicus, brand recall differs with the age and gender of the respondents.  For instance, Pepsi was the brand most recalled by men while Lakme had the highest recall among women. Nike was most popular among teenagers whereas respondents in the 31-40 age group recalled Sony.

The Tata brand had the highest recall among businessmen, LG was the most popular brand among housewives, and Maruti had the greatest recall among small-car owners. Two-wheeler owners were able to recall Hero Honda better than any other brand.
