India's personal computer market, in the second quarter (April-June, 2003), grew by 11.8 per cent on a year-on-year basis with HCL regaining the top spot in the commercial desktop space with 36,075 units and a marketshare of 9.6 per cent.

The PC market, however, declined by 8.1 per cent sequentially and in terms of marketshare, HP came second with a 8.3 per cent of the total units shipped in the commercial desktop space, while IBM followed with 8.1 per cent share, IDC India said in its quarterly PC report.

Unit shipments in Q2 totalled 595,005 while total consumer desktop market was pegged at 1,93,282 units, which is 4.5 per cent higher than the corresponding period in 2002.

Commercial desktop totalled 3,71,918 units, up 13.3 per cent on a year-on-year basis.

Seventeen thousand nine hundred and thirty one units of commercial Notebooks were sold during the quarter, up 50 per cent from Q2 of last year, while in the case of consumer Notebooks, the figure was 358, which was a 161 per cent rise over same period last year.

HP dominated the consumer desktop market with 13,060 units in Q2 and a marketshare of 6.8 per cent of the total consumer desktop units sold and HCL stood second with 4.3 per cent share.

The commercial desktop market provided respite to the overall market during Q2. Government and corporate sector both helped the market perform as per the forecast.

However, consumer desktop market fell much below expectation and registered lower than anticipated numbers due to extreme summer heat, which led the families to invest in consumer durables, Aman Munglani, head, product research, IDC India, said.

Commercial PC segment posted stronger than expected growth because of spillover billing from Q1 as a proportion of deals finalised in that quarter were billed out in Q2, IDC said.

The portable PC market grew driven by corporate and government demand.

Portable PC sales grew by 52 per cent on a year-on-year basis with all top five Notebook vendors HP, IBM, Toshiba, Dell and Acer posting steady growth.

"The overall economic recovery has just started and it is expected to take some time to percolate down to the consumer market. It is expected to first shore up the corporate bottom lines from the second half of 2003 and IDC expects robust growth in commercial PC market," it said.
