February 17, 2005 15:53 IST
Patni Computer Systems Ltd will spend Rs 1 billion ($23 million) to set up a new software development centre in Pune, the company informed the Bombay Stock Exchange said on Thursday.

The new centre will accommodate 2,000 seats. In addition to the proposed development centre, Patni is also on the lookout for 15 acres of land to build a campus, thus ensuring consistent growth in the Pune region.

Patni commenced its Pune operations in 1995 and since then has grown to more than 1900 employees, contributing 21 per cent of Patni's overall revenues in 2004.

Last year the Pune operations added 600 employees, over one-third of which came from Patni's Cymbal acquisition.

"In the last 10 years we have continuously invested in physical infrastructure, domain capabilities and new service lines in Pune, to ensure our consistent growth. Our Pune operations have been key to the overall company growth especially in the Insurance vertical," Vijay Khare, Sr. Vice-president, Patni, said.

With the Cymbal acquisition, we now have a dedicated ODC at Pune servicing one of the largest telecom companies in the US. The Pune centre will be strategic to our overall growth, he added.
