It is estimated that over 95 per cent of drugs being produced in India are off-patent and would not be affected by introduction of product patent, Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. Similarly, medicines included in the National List of Essential Medicines are also off-patent.

Allaying apprehension regarding closure of some drugs manufacturing units, he said production of existing drugs being made in India would not be affected by the introduction of product patent regime.

"As such there is no question of unemployment in the pharma industry," he added.
