Kerala has sought patents for 966 medicinal plants in accordance with the provisions in the Geographical Indicator Act, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, told the assembly on Monday.

Replying to questions, he said the state patent cell had submitted to the Centre a detailed report on the native flora of the state in December last year, which would be sent to the World Trade Organisation.

The patent cell gave the report after identifying ayurvedic modes of treatment, medicines and equipment prevalent in different parts of the state.

The cell was also taking steps to digitalise available ancient treatises on medicine.

Measures had been taken not to lose copyrights of 56 books on medicine under the traditional knowledge digital library project, he said.
