UK-based Alpha Airports and Future Group's Pantaloon Retail have won a contract valued at Rs 500 crore (Rs 5 billion) to set up duty-free shops at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.
The contract was awarded by Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd to an Alpha-Pantaloon consortium for a period of three years and three months, DIAL's parent company GMR Infrastructure informed the Bombay Stock Exchange on Wednesday.
DIAL, a joint venture of GMR, Germany's Fraport, Malaysian Airport, India Development Fund and Airports Authority of India, was earlier this year awarded the modernisation contract for Delhi airport by the government.
GMR said the Alpha-Pantaloon consortium would bring international retailing standards to Indian airports and would feature an extensive range of products by some of the largest and most popular brands in the world like Armani, Gucci, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, Nike and Swatch. Alpha Airports Group Plc has more than 140 retail outlets across 40 locations in the UK, Europe, USA and South Asia. In Asia it has outlets in Cochin, Colombo, Kathmandu and Male.
"We are pleased to appoint Alpha-Future as the duty free operator for the Delhi Airport. Their extensive experience across the globe and in the country matches DIAL's vision for providing world class experience to travelers at the Delhi Airport," DIAL Managing Director Srinivas Bommidala said.
The Alpha-Pantaloon consortium comprises of UK based Alpha Airports Group Plc and Pantaloon Retail (India) Ltd, a Future Group venture. DIAL is building a modern airport for the national capital. The first phase of the airport would be ready with the completion of a new integrated terminal building in 2010.
