Reliance Fresh stores were forced to close by police in Bhubaneswar, amid protests from traders, almost a repeat of scenes witnessed in parts of Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi in the last few days.
In a development that could impact Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Retail's Rs 3,000 crore (Rs 30 billion) plan to roll out retail and fresh food stores in Orissa, the police asked the management to down shutters after some traders staged protest in front of the stores.
Reliance officials could not be contacted for comments but sources said that company officials were told by authorities yesterday to keep their shutters down amid reports of political opposition.
Police authorities confirmed that the stores were closed after traders started protesting.
In Uttar Pradesh and Noida, Reliance Fresh stores were forced closed on Saturday in continuance of the state government's directive to police authorities on the grounds of maintaining law and order.
Last week, traders created scenes outside Reliance Fresh outlets in the national capital, although the outlets were not shut down.
