Business software provider Oracle will set up a innovation lab for embedded technologies in India and on Tuesday it launched an embedded business unit in India to create the market for the systems.

Along with India, the business unit has been set up on Tuesday in Japan and other markets of Asia Pacific.

"The innovation lab in India would come up fairly soon. We already have such labs in China and Japan. In Korea the innovation lab is at the same stage as in India," embedded business unit, Oracle Asia Pacific and Japan, vice president Mark Barton said.

The lab would come up in either Bangalore or Hyderabad where we have our development centres, Oracle India managing director Krishan Dhawan said.

"We have a large research and development presence in India. We will leverage this to help our partners in this initiative (embedded technologies), he said.

The innovation labs would enjoy close development links with Oracle research and development centres in the United States.

Embedded systems comprise a microprocessor that has software written on it for undertaking specific tasks.

The Oracle embedded business unit plans to establish licensing arrangements with independent software vendors and original equipment manufacturers, allowing them to integrate Oracle software directly in to end-user devices such as mobile handsets, home appliances and automobiles.

Market for embedded software is expected to be $25 billion in 2003-04 India's exports of embedded system and software stood at $1.6 billion, a jump of 44 per cent as compared to previous year.
