Oman Air is planning to expand its network in India with new services to Delhi and Hyderabad and enhancing its capacity on Mumbai and Kochi routes.

The plans to expand the carrier's operations in India was announced by Oman Air CEO Abdurrahman bin Harith al Busaidy and Said bin Hamdoon al Harthy, chairman of the board of directors, at the 4th annual sales and marketing conference held in Cairo.

Reviewing the performance of the carrier in the last year, Busaidy said 2004 began with a lot of optimism that the airline industry will finally return to profitability following the losses the industry suffered in the previous three years.

"Despite the suspension of the Mombasa and Colombo routes, the airline carried about 50,000 more passengers in 2004 than the preceeding year, achieved an annual seat factor of 70 per cent (versus 66 per cent in 2003), and achieved revenue growth of 8 per cent over 2003," he was quoted as saying by the Oman Observer newspaper.

Warning about new challenges, they said low-cost carriers like Air India Express, will put continued pressure on prices.

Oman Air currently operates direct international flights from Muscat to major Gulf destinations like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Doha and Kuwait.

In the subcontinent, the airline flies to four destinations in India -- Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
