Nokia, which commissioned its facility in March 2006, announced on the occasion that it would be shipping its twentieth million mobile handset manufactured here, this month.
To commemorate the occasion, Dr Singh and Sonia Gandhi presented two mobile handsets to its employees, a Nokia release said.
The company had been able to achieve the feat in record time of eleven months, which reflected its success in creating a world class manufacturing facility in India and scaling it up to cater to the burgeoning demand of the Indian telecom market, the fourth largest in the world, it said.
In keeping with the strong business momentum, the facility, which was projected to employ only 2000 workers, now had 3,600 workers.
Finland's Ambassador to India, Asko Numminen, Tamil Nadu governor S S Barnala and Union IT and Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran were also present.
Congratulating Nokia for its achievement, Maran said the seeds of liberalisation had started bearing fruit and helping India integrate itself with the global economy.
