In the years to come, nanotechnology is expected to usher the next technological revolution having deep impact on the economy and society in the 21st century.
The benefits of this technology are going to be all persuasive encompassing materials and manufacturing, computer technology, nanoelectronics, medicine, health, aeronautics and space exploration, environment, biotechnology and agriculture.
"This emerging technology, which aims at manipulating matter at the atomic or molecular level will revolutionise the way we work, communicate and live," said M J Zarabi, chairman, Organising Committee, Indian National Academy of Engineering, which is holding a two-day conference on nanotechnology in Chandigarh from December 22.
Zarabi said that governments around the world are investing heavily in nanotechnology, which according to him is being widely regarded as an enabling technology that would redefine the future of several technologies, products and markets.
Even though Department of Science and Technology and Defence Research and Development Organisation has kept substantial amount for funding various programmes under this technology, but "we will need lot more funds in the years to come because it has to be taken as a mission-oriented programme".
"The objective of holding this conference is to bring together technologists, scientists, academicians, entrepreneurs and others concerned with the development of nanotechnologies to exchange thoughts and share their experiences and to give direction to the efforts being made in progressing this important futuristic technology," member secretary of the organising committee, R P Bajpai told reporters.
Bajpai, who is also the Director of Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, Chandigarh, said the conference to be held at CSIO will witness participation from about 20 speakers from USA, Japan and UK and 40 key speakers from around India.
