Microsoft will extend cash grant of $1,08,000 each to MS Swaminathan Research Foundation and Datamation Foundation Charitable Trust for setting up community technology learning centres in India.
The two beneficiaries would get the grant over the period of one year, said Ravi Venkatesan, chairman of Microsoft Corporation of India Pvt Ltd.
"This commitment gets us one step closer to achieving the mission of leveraging technology to create equal opportunities for individuals in both rural as well as urban areas," he said.
M S Swaminathan, chairman of MSRF, said this grant would help in tapping latent potential in rural areas by leveraging power of information communication technologies.
Chetan Sharma, managing trustee of Datamation Foundation also said the association of the global IT giant would help the foundation take the power of ICT to underserved communities.
This announcement also marks a total investment of $4,77,500 by Microsoft in cash grants alone since the programme was launched in August 2004.
Over and above these cash grants, Microsoft has also made an unquantifiable investment in the development of an IT training curriculum, software donations and knowledge sharing with NGOs.
