Bangalore-based International Institute of Information Technology and Hof (Germany)-based University of Applied Sciences have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for joint academic programmes in information technology.

Elaborating on the MoU signed between the two institutes, Erwin Huber, minister of economic affairs, State of Bavaria, said both the institutions will take up common academic programmes, initiate joint research and exchange students.

"Bavaria is looking forward to more such scientific tie-ups between the two states especially in the IT-related sector. Both India and Bavaria should focus on the development of future-oriented high-tech products and technologies. There are many opportunities to benefit from each other in scientific as well as economic terms," he added.

Currently, 250 Bavarian companies have invested in India and in turn 30 Indian companies like Dr Reddy's, HCL, Reliance, Satyam, TCS and Wipro have set up base in Bavaria as part of their European operations.

India has emerged as an important Bavarian trade partner with more than 10 percent of Indian exports to Germany going to the state of Bavaria. The trade volume between Bavaria and India has touched euro one billion in the first nine months this year.

To further consolidate Bavaria-Karnataka relationships, which was started in 2001, Huber said he was leading a business delegation comprising 40 industrialists from Bavaria, who also participated at the Bangalore's premier IT event — Bangalore IT.In 2006.

According to Germany's consul general to India, Heinz Kopp, "The growing trade between the two countries (Germany-India) has touched euro 7 billion. The relationship between India and Bavaria has touched a new high and in the last 12 months the passenger volume from and to India rose by 50 percent due to daily flights from Munich and Indian cities."
