Motorola Inc on Monday launched its new research and development facility at Hyderabad.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy inaugurated the new R&D facility in the presence of Edward J Zander, chairman and chief executive officer and Padmasree Warrior, executive vice president and chief technology officer, Motorola Inc.
The new Motorola technology centre will realise its goals under the guidance of Mohan Kumar, corporate vice-president, Motorola Software. It will house over 1,000 engineers undertaking pioneering work in the field of innovation in telecommunications and mobile applications. The new Motorola building is located at Hi-tec City, Madhapur.
It will have a large team of dedicated engineers developing software for intelligent user interface used in Motorola phones. In addition, the centre will also be working on technologies like WiMax, network management and autonomics, security and high availability platforms.
"Today's announcement of the new R&D facility for MSG is yet another testimony of our commitment to, and confidence in, India. Software is a major driver of technology and our Hyderabad facility's focus
on software engineering addresses a key aspect of our global operations. It will play a strong role in strengthening our position to leverage India's intrinsic advantages: excellent IT skills, scientific talent and competent, mature workforce," Edward Zander said.
"India has long been a global R&D hub for Motorola. The new facility will help us strengthen our technology organisation and help Motorola develop critical IPR, drive innovation, including next generation technologies tailor-made for specific geographies, and deliver enriching user experience through iconic products," Padmasree Warrior added.
Calling the R&D facility is a significant milestone, Firoze Vandrevala, chairman Motorola India and corporate vice-president Motorola Inc, said, "The centre will help deliver at an accelerated pace the organisation's global commitments by leveraging the expertise of the Indian software talent pool."
Motorola set up its first R&D facility in Bangalore in 1991 and since then the company has had the largest, most versatile R&D presence in the country. As much as 40 percent of the software used in Motorola phones is developed by MSG's India design centres.
