Lufthansa starts premium eco class on Delhi-Frankfurt route

A Lufthansa aircraftLeading German airline Lufthansa has introduced premium economy class on its Delhi-Frankfurt route and is planning to roll out this new travel class on its other flights from India by this year end.

Delhi is the second Indian destination after Bengaluru to have this new cabin class, Lufthansa said.

The first flight with premium economy offering took offfrom New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on April 23, the airline said.

Lufthansa operates jumbo Airbus A380 on its New Delhi-Frankfurt route while the Bengaluru-Frankfurt route is serviced by Boeing 747-8.

Premier economy is a new cabin class which offers seats with wider leg space with fares higher than the economy class but lower than the business class seats.

"We are very pleased to announce the introduction of premium economy class on the Delhi-Frankfurt route onboard the A380.

“Delhi is the second destination in India to have this offering and we expect it to be available on all long haul routes in India in 2015," Lufthansa Passenger Airlines

Director for South Asia, Wolfgang Will said.

The roll-out of the new travel class in Delhi, after Bengaluru, clearly demonstrates the importance of the Indian market for Lufthansa and underlines Lufthansa's commitment to

provide its customers with consistent and the best Lufthansa experience world-wide, he said.

"The premium economy offering will be ideal for leisure travellers with higher budget and for business travellers with constrained budgets," he added.

In India, Tata-SIA joint venture airline Vistara is the only carrier which offers premier economy segment on its flights.

"Lufthansa's new offering on the New Delhi-Frankfurt route comes with great on-board as well as on-ground benefits, including 50 per cent extra legroom space as compared to the economy class," Lufthansa said.

Besides, the free baggage allowance is double of what is allowed for a passenger traveling in the economy class to Europe among others benefits, it said.

Passengers traveling in the premium economy will also be able to access Lufthansa business Lounges prior to take-off, for a nominal fee, the airline said.
