L&T Construction bags $1,403-mn Riyadh metro order

DollarsEngineering major Larsen & Toubro and its consortium partners have bagged an order valued at $1,403 million or Rs 8,250 crore (Rs 82.5 billion) to develop a metro project in Saudi Arabia.

L&T Construction won the turnkey contract from ArRiyadh Development Authority in Saudi Arabia for the design, construction and commissioning of the metro project in Riyadh.

"The heavy civil infrastructure business of L&T Construction has taken the lead and made a major breakthrough in the international market by securing an order worth $1,403 million or Rs 8,250 crore from the ArRiyadh Development Authority," the company said on Monday in a statement.

L&T secured the order as a JV partner of ArRiyadh New Mobility Consortium, which includes Ansaldo STS, Bombardier Transportation Ltd, Impregilo

S.p.A and Nesma & Partners of Saudi Arabia, according to the release.

This order is a part of the $5,941.93 million or Rs 35,000-crore (Rs 350-billion) project, which is to be implemented in 4 years.

This contract involves the design, construction and commissioning of line 3 of 41 km of driverless train operation to carry around 5,000 passengers per hour per direction.

It includes construction of bridges, tunnels, elevated and underground stations, depots, roads and CCTV and public announcement systems.

The rail systems will be undertaken by Ansaldo and the rolling stock by Bombardier.

The entire infrastructure facilities together with electromechanical and plumbing systems will be executed by the integrated joint venture comprising L&T, Impregilo and Nesma.

The design and engineering will be done by Hyder & Idom and the project management will be undertaken by Worley Parsons.
