The market for LCD monitors in India is expected to witness a four-fold increase during the calendar year 2004.
From a paltry 22,000 units per annum market size in calendar year 2002, the market for LCD monitors in India is estimated to increase to 100,000 units during the current year. The average price of LCD have also tumbled from Rs 35,000 in 2002 to Rs 23,000 in 2003.
According to industry sources, should the estimated demand for LDC monitors in India move up to 400,000 in 2004, prices are expected to reach sub-Rs 15,000 levels.
Sanjay Maheshwari, Head Distribution, Philips India Ltd, said, "Demand for LCD monitors are picking up thanks to large off take from industries like banking and IT boom (call centres). Should the duty levied on LCD monitors ease, we can expect the prices to fall to sub-Rs 15,000 level."
The company proposes to increase its market share in the LCD market from the present 23 per cent to close to 50 per cent during the present calendar year. In India, Samsung continues to dominate the LCD monitors market with a 35 per cent market share.
Philips India also plans to start production of LCD monitors in India soon. Company officials refused to divulge the likely date for commencing production, capacity or location of the LCD monitors plant.
The LCD monitors sold by Philips in India, currently is sourced from the company's manufacturing bases across the world.
Philips India conducted a nation-wide launch of 150P LF3 LCD LightFrame PC monitors yesterday. The company's spokesperson said, the new LCD monitor is the world's first monitor to offer on-board digital display devices with its Digital LightFrame technology for LCD monitors.
This technology, patented by Philips, offers features like crystal clear internet images, and TV-quality, video and photo display.
This new LCD monitor also offers a software-driven technique of highlighting select section of the screen.
Philips new 150P LF3 LCD LightFrame monitor is priced at Rs 32,000 (MRP) and the company expects the market operating price (MOP) to be around Rs 28,000, inclusive of taxes.
