Jet Airways on Friday became the first private airliner to land at Thoise in Siachen, world's highest military air base, as its charter flight took 90 soldiers to the base of the glacier.

The flight was inaugurated by director general (operations) Lt Gen P K Singh for ferrying troops serving in the Siachen glacier, an official spokesman said in New Delhi.

The expression of interest for operating charter flight to Thoise was invited by the defence ministry from all domestic airlines and subsequently Jet Airways was shortlisted since it met all terms and conditions, he said.

Thoise is an Indian Air Force airfield at the base of the Siachen glacier.

This facility, besides being a welfare measure, will also result into huge saving in time, effort and money, as troops will be available for longer time for operational duties, the spokesman said, adding "resultantly, it will be a high motivational factor."
