Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday said it had not registered any case against Jet Airways for alleged "shady" funding of the private domestic carrier neither did it intend to carry out a preliminary enquiry into the matter.

Highly-placed CBI sources said the agency had written a letter to the government stating its inability to register a case against the premier private scheduled carrier as there was no evidence that Jet Airways was getting funds from people with "shady" background.

The letter stated that the evidence collected by various intelligence agencies were "insufficient" and could not stand legal scrutiny, the sources said.

CBI had been asked by the Union home ministry to carry out a probe into the alleged shady funding of Jet Airways.

At a high-level meeting earlier this year, CBI director U S Misra had been asked to ascertain the sources of funds invested in the airline by its owner Naresh Goyal, their legitimacy or their linkage with the underworld, if any.

The high-level meeting was attended by representatives from Union home ministry, officials from Research and Analysis Wing, Intelligence Bureau, Enforcement Directorate and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

In its letter to the ministry, CBI said all "evidences" collected by various agencies had been "weighed" properly by the agency but it could not lead to any case against the scheduled carrier.

CBI could not even register a preliminary enquiry on the matter with the available evidence, it said.
