October 27, 2005 01:11 IST

The government of Andhra Pradesh has expressed its keenness for cooperation in the field of tourism and IT sectors with the government of Mauritius.

During a brief meeting with Mauritius Prime Minister Naveenchandra Ramgoolam, Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy suggested the opening of a recruitment centre in Hyderabad by the government of Mauritius for creating job opportunities in that country as part of the mutual cooperation in these sectors. He said that many people from the state were going to Mauritius in search of jobs at great risk.

Quickly responding to the request, Ramgoolam assured the chief minister that his government would provide opportunities to Andhra IT professionals in Mauritius, a press release said.

During the meeting, the chief minister said that the state had achieved significant progress in IT exports worth Rs 8,270 crore in 2004-05 and also reported a growth rate of 64.5% as  compared to the national average of 35%.

Hyderabad is home to over 1,250 IT companies, with majority of them being multinationals, he said adding, many more are showing keen interest to set up their operations.

Later, addressing the CEOs of leading IT companies at a luncheon, organised by the IT & Communications Department in association with Nasscom, Ramgoolam said, "The ICT sector in Mauritius has seen robust growth with 90 companies working in the sector."

With bilingual skills in English and French and low attrition rate at five per cent, Mauritius can be looked up as a viable alternative for the setting up of call centres to serve French-speaking customers, he said.
