Govt to review language technology

The department of information technology has constituted a committee to review the goals of its technology development for Indian languages programme and suggest appropriate directions.

The committee will be headed by a secretary in the department of IT. It will identify projects that can quickly result in products and services that meet public needs and also identify current status of language technology in each of the major areas of technology in India and abroad.

The committee has also been asked to suggest technology development goals to be set for the programme as mission projects and other long-term projects and how such goals can lead to deployable systems.

It will suggest strategy to be followed to achieve technology development goals and their deployment.

Besides, the committee will identify major gaps in technology, data collection and trained manpower and suggest appropriate remedial action.

The committee has also been asked to identify major opportunities worldwide for language technologies that are developed in India.
