IT sector to employ about 2.25 mn by 2015

A BPO unit.The Indian IT sector is expected to directly employ about 2.25 million professionals by 2015, government said on Monday.

Quoting a study conducted by the Department of IT in consultation with the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council, it said that 'an estimated 2.25 million persons would be directly employed in the industry by 2015 as against 0.77 million in 2007'.

Minister of state for labour and employment Harish Rawat told the Lok Sabha that incremental human resource requirement has been estimated to be around 1.5 million persons.

The minister, in a related question, said that during the Eleventh plan period, the government aims to create 58 million additional job opportunities in various sectors through special employment generation programmes.

He said that one of the targets of the Eleventh plan is to ensure that at least 33 per cent of the direct and indirect beneficiaries of all government schemes are women and girl children.
