Intel Corporation, the chip giant, has announced the launch of three new Pentium M (mobile) processors, built on Intel's 90 nanometre manufacturing technology for the first time.

With this launch, Intel expects a further increase in adoption to mobile computing in the coming years.

Speaking at the launch of this new processors, R K Amar Babu, director (South Asia) sales and marketing group, Intel Technology India Pvt Ltd, said, "The highlight of this processor is higher frequency, micro-architectural enhancements and more cache.

"However, we will not be able to say when we would phase out existing processors. It depends on the customers. From P4 to this new processor, Intel has shown a 33 per cent increase in performance. The performance of this processor is 10 per cent better than Banias, which is the previous version."

Formerly code-named Dothan, this new Intel Pentium M Processor, 735, 745 and 755 are built on Intel's high volume 90 nanometre manufacturing process technology. One of the highlights in Dothan is the fact that it has 140 million transistors packed into it, as against 77 million in Banias.

Greater adoption of laptops, decreasing cost of access point to enable mobile computing has augured well for Intel.

The launch of Dothan processors is yet another step by Intel to take mobile computing to greater heights.

In fact, the company takes pride in the fact that the launch of Mobile Centrino notebooks has increased the number of hotspots from 2,000 to 100,000. Mobile Centrino alone fetched Intel $3 billion in revenues last year.
