How has the NDA government fared in tackling price rise, an issue it raised hell over in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections? The Rediff Labs team finds out.

Is the Narendra Modi government failing badly when it comes to tackling inflation?

Consider this.

In the 90 days since the NDA came to power on May 16, 2014, the prices of essential commodities have more or less remained the same.

In some cases it has fallen, like for tea which cost Rs 400 a kg on May 16, 2014, but came down to Rs 328 a kg on August 14, 2014.

However, for most other commodities the prices have not reduced. The infographic below, put together by the Rediff Labs team, shows how retail prices of essential commodities have been affected in the three months of Modi sarkar.

As you can see, shocking has been the escalation in the prices of onion, tomato and potato, a common staple across the country, thus affecting family budgets adversely.

These prices are as recorded by the Department of Consumer Affairs which has taken the average price of each commodity from the five different zones: west, east, north, north-east, and south.

A modal price was taken into account from all-India zones for deciding the price of each commodity.
