New Right to Information Act soon

A modified new bill on Right to Information Act would soon be introduced in Parliament, Information and Broadcasting Minister S Jaipal Reddy said on Monday.

The Union Cabinet had already discussed the modified bill, which could further strengthen the present Act, Reddy, who was at Mylavaram in Krishna district, told reporters.

The Centre would soon create a regulation body to check obscenity in the media and TV, Reddy said adding "unless the body is autonomous without any interference, serious actions cannot be taken against the offenders."

Referring to Direct to Home channel, the Minister said it was for the first time in the world a free platform was being provided to viewers and 17 channels would be added to current 33 channels to make it fifty.

He said the cable operators were expected to telecast all pay channels and if any body failed to do it, the customers could complain to the court or revenue authorities.
