'Indo-US trade has taken centre stage'

The India and US delegation level talks finalised many issues taking the partnership forward in the 21st century, Anand Sharma, Minister of Commerce and Industry, said while talking to rediff.com.

Talking about high level talks on Monday in Hyderabad House he said, "The economic relation is important underpinning of Indo-US relation. It's one way of strengthening strategic relation. I think trade relation has taken the centre stage."

Sharma said, "You should note how we have signed bilateral trade agreement with South Korea, ASEAN countries and Japan. India's integration with Asia is on and we believe that Indo-US relation broadens our options."

Sharma also said that today's bilateral talks went on very well at Hyderabad House. India and the US have agreed on range of issues.

"India and the US have signed agreement for setting up of joint clean energy research centre, and also for global centre for on nuclear energy partnership. India and the US will start energy co-operation programme as well. As president Obama has announced both countries will co-operate on Homeland security, too." Sharma said.

He emphasised that there were many deliverables and it's satisfying for both sides. He counted support for India at Nuclear Suppliers group as important achievement.

The agreement has been also signed for study of dynamic seasonal prediction of Indian summer monsoon rainfall. At the bilateral delegation level meeting an agreement has been signed for Understanding on Shale gas resources. This understanding will help assess shale gas in Indian basin, said Sharma.

Sharma said, "We have signed a MoU on establishment of a global disease detection centre in India." He said that calibrated bilateral approach in strengthening trade relations has helped immensely.
