18,000 wind mills installed in India

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah on Friday said the government has installed 18,000 wind mills across the country with production capacity of 10,386 MW.

"A total wind power capacity of 10,386 MW comprising of around 18,000 wind mills of various capacities have been installed in the country till June 30 this year," Abdullah said, while replying to a query in Lok Sabha.

"A total of 216 locations have already been identified, which are considered potential sites for installation of grid connected wind turbines," he added.

Abdullah said the Ministry was taking up Wind Resource Assessment studies in various states including the coastal areas for identifying the potential for deploying wind power projects.

Meanwhile, replying to another question, Abdullah said India and the US have agreed to cooperate in various areas of renewable energy technologies under the aegis of Indo-US Energy Forum.

"An India-US Working Group on new technologies and renewable energy has been formed to identify areas of cooperation, activities and partners for taking the cooperation forward," he said.
