IIT-Madras research park by 2007

IIT-MadrasĀ on Monday signed an agreement with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd for joint research in design of boilers and other engineering areas, even as it said its Rs 100-crore (Rs 1 billion) Research Park would be ready by February 2007.

With the help of BHEL, IIT-M would set up a research centre at the BHEL campus in Tiruchirapalli, the state-owned company's Executive Director V Gopalakrishnan told reporters in Chennai.

Besides manufacturing, mechanical and metallurgical engineering, IIT-M and BHEL would work together on structural design, Information Technology and other relevant areas of mutual interest.

On the Research Park project of the institute, IIT-M director M S Ananth said the state government has allotted six and half acres for the park, work on which would start soon.

The human resources development ministry might give the institution a grant for setting up the park, he said.

Professor Ananth said the institution proposed to offer a two year programme on M Tech in Nuclear Engineering next year.

Besides, as part of the MoU with BHEL, two new courses on energy engineering and welding engineering would be offered from the academic year 2006-07.
