This would perhaps be the first of its kind developed by any Indian institute informed Shishir K Dube, director, IIT-KGP.
The institute has already applied for global patent of the same, he added. The institute has yet not sketched any plan regarding the marketing of the product but will largely depend on the price that is offered by any domestic or international company, hinted Goenka.
IIT-KGP has also initiated talks with the government of West Bengal and representatives of the Japanese government for setting up a semi conductor manufacturing facility in the state.
"There were initial talks with the Japanese delegation and it was known that they may only provide assistance in setting up the infrastructure though nothing has taken concrete shape," said Dube.
The required investment for this project is likely to be around $100 million, he added.
The Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy cell of IIT-KGP has put of a great show this year executing around 333 research and consultancy projects during this year worth above Rs 90 crore (Rs 900 million).
The target set for the next financial year will be around Rs 200 crore (Rs 2 billion), informed Dube.
As a part of SRIC, IIT-KGP has taken up the pilot project in providing architectural and structural engineering expertise in setting up 49 'cyclone shelter' along the coast of Orissa in collaboration with the government of Orissa.
"In addition to this innovative cyclone shelter, IIT-KGP is actively discussing with the Orissa state government for a series of activities under the IIT-KGP government of Orissa Technology Mission," said Dube.
IIT-KGP has also developed a software for predicting tidal wave associated with cyclone and the technology has been transferred to seven other countries, including Bangladesh, Thailand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
IIT-KGP will also be launching a master of technology course (M Tech) in Computational Seismology from the next academic year.
IIT-KGP has also taken up the task in developing enterprise resource planning (ERP) for Coal India Limited that will link up 17 regional offices of CIL for a project cost of Rs 7-8 crore (Rs 70-80 million), he informed.
