The Vinod Gupta School of Management, at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, is in an expansion mode and will be increasing its student intake capacity to 120 in the 2005 session and 150 thereafter every year from present figure of 90.

Vinod Gupta, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur who initiated the establishment of the management school, today inaugurated a new block spread over 16000 square feet.

The overall funding of $2 million for this expanision was provided by Gupta, informed Kalyan Chakrabori, dean of VGSOM.

Since the inception of VGSOM. Gupta has contributed around $5 million including his contribution of $200,000 every year for students who travel overseas for internship.

The management school will aim to introduce a 5 year dual-degree programme that will integrate four years Bachelor of Technology (honours) and 2 years Master of Business Management, thus saving one year for the students by 2006.

The target number of students would be around 20, Gupta said.

The institute might also introducing a two-year full-time Masters of Business Administration course exclusive for Armed service officers of the rank of commissioned officers. Candidates would need to be sponsored for this course.

"Experienced Armed service officers are some of the best managers a country can have. This course would pave the way for officials who want to be back to civilian life," said Gupta.

This would also provide an opportunity to use their skills and knowledge for value addition after retirement, he added.

The school was keen to select candidates with the right work experience for its business management programme but this not happening owing to existing practice among management schools to take in fresh graduates, complained Gupta.

"The best candidates for MBA programmes are always those with relevant experience. I would urge the selection committee to exclude the candidates with adequate experice from the ambit of JMET, the entrance test for the course," he said.

Vinod Gupta is the founder and chief executiove officer of United State based data providing company infoUSA.

The $300 million company is expected to register a turnover of around $ 400 million this financial year, informed Gupta.

The company has been expanding across the globe primarily through acquisitions. However, the company has no plans to acquire any Indian company at present, Gupta said.
