IIM-Bangalore: Despite perceptions of a looming recession, over 100 global and local companies came in droves to hire the 256 students who will be graduating from Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore in another couple of months.

More than 130 students were placed within the first two days (slot zero), and the same number of students had more than one offer. Officials said that this year's placements witnessed the highest number of investment banks coming in to pick up the students.

While consulting were the favourites with the students accounting for 37 per cent of the placements, investment banking came in second with 21 per cent, finance (19 per cent), marketing (7 per cent) information technology (6 per cent) and others (10 per cent) followed.

McKinsey led the pack by picking up 15 students, followed by Lehman Brothers and Boston Consulting taking 11 each. This year's batch, too, had their share of entrepreneurs with four students who opted out of the placements.

Of the 256 students, about 100 students received pre-placement offers, and about 75-odd had bagged offer letters during the lateral placement that happened few weeks prior to the final placement.

About 50 of these students, who were content with their offer letters, opted out of the final placement.

Among the graduating batch, 51 were women. Of these, 20 will be taking up jobs abroad.

Nearly 75 per cent of the students opted to stay back in India. Blackstone, ING Asia Pacific, Oliver Wyman, Lebua Hotels and MAPE advisory were among the few companies who made their presence felt for the first time during this year.

IIM-Kozhikode: Final placements at IIM-K culminated with the 2008 batch achieving an average salary of Rs 14.83 lakh per annum (Rs 1.4 million), a rise of 16 per cent over last year's figure.

While the highest domestic salary shot up by 28 per cent to Rs 29 lakh (Rs 2.9 million) per annum, the highest international salary recorded a phenomenal 60 per cent jump, capping at $175,000 per annum by an oil and gas company.

About 105 recruiters from around the globe participated in the final placements with 45 initiating a recruitment relationship with IIM-K this year. About 178 students who participated in the placements were successful in bagging over 402 jobs.

Accenture made the highest number of offers across campuses at IIM-K. However, the banking and financial services sector also remained a favourite with students with 36 per cent of the batch being offered plum roles at top corporations.
