The under-18 Indian football team - currently on a 21-day United Kingdom-tour playing for the MILK Cup - has been covered for Rs 5.17 crore (Rs 51.7 million) by ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company under the overseas travel insurance plan, Globetrotter.
The policy also covers injuries due to playing football. The issuance of travel policy to the Indian junior national football team is significant on the backdrop of the fact that the Indian sportspersons including the Indian hockey team - which won the Hamburg Masters - have been meted dissatisfactory service at the Indian airports.
Each of the 18 players of the football team and four officials have been covered for about Rs 23.5 lakh (Rs 2.35 million) each.
The cover helps take care of all the mundane travel hassles, which otherwise is a routine with all the Indian non-cricket sports teams touring abroad, said the company's press statement.
The overseas travel insurance cover includes medical expenses, dental treatment, loss of passport, loss of checked baggage, personal accident, baggage delay and personal liability.
Even as the request for the cover came just one day prior to their departure, ICICI Lombard completed the entire process of issuing Globetrotter through its online module.
"It would have been difficult to issue the policy at the 11th hour. But the online module made it quick, easy and convenient to issue the policy, thereby ensuring that the players were covered before they departed for UK on July 14," said the company's head of marketing Kartik Jain.
ICICI Lombard does not make it mandatory to undertake medical check-ups prior to the issuance of such policies, thereby facilitating the service of the urgent request, he added.
"The speed at which we issued Globetrotter as well as the low premium, because of the day-wise calculation of premium, in comparison to other insurance companies are the highlights of our policy. Also, the number of covers made available (total 8) are the maximum offered in the industry. And any assistance the team needs when they are abroad would be serviced through our 24x7 international call centre," added Jain.
