IBM the leader in India, China: IDC

IBM has gained substantial revenue lead over HP, Sun and Dell in India and China, the two red-hot server markets, according to IDC's latest customer revenue data for the two countries.

According to IDC, IBM gained revenue share in select key server areas during the second quarter of 2005, compared to the corresponding period last year, holding top position in Unix server revenue in China and growing 7.0 points year-to-year. In India, IBM grew its Unix server revenue 142 percent, year-to-year.

IBM was top in overall customer revenue in India with 33.1 percent revenue share while its revenue share of the Unix server market in India grew 22.2 points year-to-year in the second quarter of this year.

According to IDC, IBM also achieved growth in the competitive storage market in India. In a market that grew 22.0 percent year to year, IDC reports that IBM India grew its total disk storage customer revenue 92.3 percent, the largest growth of the top three vendors in the area.

"IBM's investments in the emerging areas of the People's Republic of China and India are paying off," said Maureen McGuire, vice president of strategy, IBM Systems and Technology Group. "Today, customers and business partners are turning to IBM in these fast growing economies because of our ability to supply them with sophisticated, on demand computing solutions," he said.

One IBM official said that having a strong foothold in China and India positions IBM well for anticipated growth in those developing markets. She said IBM expects to accelerate its momentum in China and India with innovative new products.
