In a move aimed at providing more functional autonomy to Indian Airlines, the government restructured the state-run carrier's board.

The government has appointed Anup K Srivastava, director (personnel) Indian Airlines, Anil Goel, managing director, Alliance Air and M S Balakrishna, director (finance) Indian Airlines on its board.

This also forms a part of the government's move to give the management of the carrier more representation on the board. Till now, the only professional from Indian Airlines on its board was its chairman and managing director.

There has been a demand for a long time from various quarters, including Indian Airlines' top management to have functional heads representation on its board.

Government sources also said that a similar exercise is also expected in the case of Air India also with various functional heads of the carrier also inducted on to its board.

The other members on Indian Airline's board are V Thulasidas, chairman and managing director, Air India, PK Mishra, additional secretary & financial advisor, ministry of civil aviation, K Ramalingam, chairman, Airports Authority of India and Sanjay Narayan, joint secretary, ministry of civil aviation.

This move also assumes importance as Indian Airlines is in the process of tapping the capital market.
