2004 spelt boom for hotel industry

Helped by robust growth in tourist inflow in the country, the Indian hotel industry saw their occupancy levels rising to 59.7 per cent in 2003-04, an increase of 4.9 per cent over the occupancy level of the previous year.

The All India Average Room rate also jumped by 34.2 per cent in 2003-04 to Rs 2,689 from Rs 2,004 in the year-ago period, says the Indian Hotel Survey 2003-04 brought out by Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India in collaboration with HVS International and CNN.

Anticipating increased reach of Indian private airlines across the globe coupled with improved airports, the survey has predicted that the present bullish trend in hospitality industry will get strengthened in the coming years, further raising the demand for hotel room nights.

As per the survey, the Five Star deluxe hotels lead the pack, registering an occupancy of 68 per cent in 2003-04 while the occupancy level in heritage hotels stood at 46.5 per cent.

Cochin registered 11.5 per cent growth in occupancy levels, which was the highest. Among the metros, Delhi hotels topped the growth in occupancy levels at 10.3 per cent in

2003-04. This was followed by Mumbai at 3.7 per cent and Kolkata at one per cent. However, Chennai witnessed decline of 2.3 per cent in occupancy level for the second consecutive year, the survey said.
