General Motors India aims to double its production to 50,000 units even as it expects to clock sales of 20,000 units of all models during this calendar year.

"We have a capacity for 25,000 units and we intend to double this in view of the growing demand for our models, including the latest Chevorlet Optra which has notched up sales of 2,600 units since its launch 10 weeks ago," Sanjeev Garg, director (vehicle and spare parts), GMI said in Mumbai on Friday.

He said sales of Corsa, Optra and other models during the nine month period ending September was 10,987 units (7,081 units last year), a growth 55 per cent over last year.

Launching the Chevolet Optra automatic in Mumbai, GM India vice president and managing director Aditya Vij said GM Corporation, the parent, demonstrated its faith in this market by making India among the first countries in the world to build and sell the Chevorlet Optra.

The two Optra models - 1.8 LS AT has been priced Rs 950,000 and the 1.8 LT AT at 10.76 lakh (1.07 million) - launched on Friday have been priced lower than the Sonata, Toyota Corrolla and the Honda Accord, to tap the C and D segment, he said.

Garg expects a sales of 5,000 units of the new model by December end as the demand for such cars was around 450-500 units a month.

GM India vice president (corporate affairs) P Balendran said General Motors Corporation had invested $21 million for setting up a research laboratory and vehicle engineering centre in Bangalore.
