General Motors India on Thursday launched premium hatch-back 'Opel Corsa Sail' and said it would invest Rs 180 crore (Rs 1.8 billion) by the year-end to roll out more vehicles.

The premium hatch-back would be available in two versions -- 1.4 and 1.6 litre petrol engines -- which would sport price tags of Rs 439,000 and Rs 465,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi) respectively, GMI president and managing director Aditya Vij told a news conference in New Delhi.

The Indian subsidiary of US car major aims at doubling sales of 'Corsa' from 7,000 units, he said, adding that the rolling out of the new car signifies the second phase of GMI in the country.

"After consolidating its position in the country, GMI launched

the 'Chevrolet' brand and with the lauch of hatchback we have started targeting volumes which marks the second phase of the company since its inception here," Vij said.

After the introduction of 'Chevrolet' brand in India, the company has decided to introduce cars under the 'Opel' brand-name to cater to the premium segment while the 'Chevrolet' would be targeted at the mainstream market.

"We have already invested Rs 1,200 crore (Rs 12 billion) in India which would go up to Rs 1,300 crore (Rs 13 billion) at our plant in Halol, Gujarat. The major chunk of investment would be for the future launches," he said.

At present, the 'Corsa' is available in notch-back and station wagon versions.
