Expressing concern over the quality of life in Ahmedabad and other cities of Gujarat, the recently incorporated Gujarat state executive council of Ficci decided to form a task force to improve cleanliness and hygiene.

They also decide to create the right social and physical infrastructure to help in improving the living conditions in these cities.

The meeting held on Friday here was attended by prominent industrialists and members of the affiliated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the state.

While the task force for improvement of quality of life in the cities of Gujarat will be chaired by Nitin Shukla, chief executive officer of Shell Hazira Pvt Ltd, another task force was formed under the chairmanship of Amit Goradia, who is also the chairman of Ficci's Gujarat state council to look into the problems of the existing industries in the state.

"A vibrant Gujarat which can attract investment can be made possible only if the existing industries are healthy and are looking at the future expansion possibilities. This task force would prepare its report and then discuss with the state government on sector-wise problems that exist and how these could be remedied," said a Ficci release here.

Ficci also has created a special task force to tackle issues related to tourism and entertainment industry which will also look into the issues of infrastructure like airport, roads and other related facilities.

Another task force under the chairmanship of the former chairman of CII's Gujarat chapter, Sunil R Parekh, also has been formed as the members felt that there was a need for private sector investment so that the surplus water can be effectively utilised.

The task force with the help of experts will look into this issue and submit their proposals to the state government.

As the ministry of defence is looking at privatisation and outsourcing of various defence-related items, Ficci also has decided to create another task force to interact with the defence ministry and local entrepreneurs to see how this effort of the ministry can be promoted in Gujarat.

A task force under the chairmanship of Hiren Patel has been set up to deal with the issues of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and this task force will review the state government's bio-technology policy and look into the overall needs for the growth of this sector in Gujarat.

Following the executive council meeting, the industrialists later had a round table discussion with Anil Patel, minister for state for industry and tourism and also with D Rajagopalan, principal secretary, (industry and mines).
