To keep a check on the prices of drugs used for the treatment of AIDS and cancer, the government is planning to use separate provisions of the Drug Price Control Order.
The government feels the economic criteria used for deciding price control will not work in the case of these two categories.
The Sandhu Committee, which was set up to examine the ambit of price control, has asked the Rotary Cancer Institute of AIIMS and the National Aids Control Organisation to provide a list of drugs in the two categories that could be brought under price control mechanism.
The primary hurdle faced by the committee in evolving a price control structure for these two categories is the apparent lack of retail data.
