Kinetic Engineering on Tuesday launched India's most expensive motorcycle -- Comet 250 -- priced at a whopping Rs 167,000.
Aimed at the upwardly mobile youth, the limited edition Comet 250 would be sold in select cities, Kinetic Engineering joint managing director Sulajja Firodia Motwani told a news conference.
The motorcycle, booking for which closes on November 20, will be brought from the stable of Hyosung Motors of Korea as completely knocked down kits and assembled at the Ahmednagar plant of Kinetic.
Hyosung Motors is the technical collaborator of Kinetic Engineering.
If the same motorcycle was to be imported, it would have cost a colossal three times the price of Comet 250 as the advantage of lower duties on CKDs would not have been there, she said.
The company will sell only 500 units of Comet 250, which comes fitted with a 27-brake horse power twin cylinder and oil-cooled engine with mono shock absorbers, dual disc brakes, electric start and 'tyres as wide as that of mid-size car Esteem'.
The high-end motorcycle is the second such offering from Kinetic Engineering, which had introduced 250cc motorcycle Aquila in 2003 and has sold 400 units so far.
In 1999, the Pune-based firm had entered into a technical tie-up with Hyosung and introduced motorcycles like GF 125, GF 170 and Aquila from the Hyosung portfolio.
Almost all the parts of Comet 250 are imported except those, which are mandatory for homologation (road worthiness test) requirements.
Comet 250 comes with warranty for genuine spare parts and there would be specially trained mechanics for the motorcycle, Motwani said.
The motorcycle would be sold in cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Chennai, Bangalore,
Hyderabad, Kolkata, Guwahati, Siliguri and Coimbatore.
"We do not want to position Comet 250 as a mass product. We will ensure the exclusivity of the motorcycle for our customers," she said.
