Global networking giant Cicso Systems plans to concentrate on network development and broadband internet penetration in rural India.

The company has set up its second headoffice in India and is all set to double the staff strength to 10,000.

Cisco Systems Executive V-P and Chief Globalisation Officer Wim Elfrink said this after inaugurating a global delivery centre set up jointly by Cisco and Pune-based Zensar Technologies.

He said, the slowdown in the US markets would not affect Cisco's India expansion plans. "Slowdown is a short- term process and we generally plan for longer term.

Therefore, such developments do not affect us," he asserted.

Elaborating Cisco's future expansion plans in India, he added, "More than 20 per cent of Cisco's overall employee strength is based in India. The broadband penetration and networking infrastructure are very poor in this country. This provides an excellent business opportunity for Cisco and, hence, we will continue to grow here."

He pointed out that the big Indian population is the greatest strength of the Indian market. "India must increase the broadband penetration to promote inclusive growth," he added.

He added, Cisco's association with Zensar for application development and other support services would continue forever.
