Global data networking company, Cisco Systems on Wednesday hinted at setting up its manufacturing plant in India, which will include some of its mainline products like routers and switches.
"The only thing we have not got here is manufacturing. We will talk about it in the evening. The company had committed $1.1 billion investment in November last year.
"So far in India we have presence in R&D campus, R&D resources, Cisco Capital, Business development/ventures and service agreement," Cisco Systems CEO and chairman John Chambers said at the CII-CEO forum.
Chambers has a scheduled meeting with IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran in the evening and it is expected that the manufacturing plans will possibly be disclosed then.
The $30 billion company, treats India as a strategic market and its largest R&D centre is in the country.
The company dominates the networking market in core technologies of routing and switching as well as WLAN and network security.
On being asked if he is looking at India for contract manufacturing of his Cisco products, Chambers who is on his third visit to the country said, "India offers opportunity in manufacturing in many areas."
Earlier addressing the forum, he said Cisco is in the midst of a market inflection point that is changing the face of networking. The network is changing how we communicate, collaborate, entertain and do business.
He showcased to the Indian industry leaders an experience on the Cisco Telepresence solution that creates "in-person" experience between people, places and events.
"Network is strategic, high-impact communications requirement that is essential to drive business transformation and create real competitive advantage. It is vital for emerging markets like India to take advantage of ICT networks to connect people and transform businesses in ways not previously done."
India of late has seen a manufacturing rush though belated. Flextronics, Dell Computers apart from Nokia, Motorola are all manufacturing in India.
