Communications and IT Minister Arun Shourie on Monday inaugurated the Confederation of Indian Industry's office in Malaysia, its 14th international office.

Speaking on the occasion, Shourie said both India and Malaysia had several avenues to enhance cooperation and hoped that the CII office would help to further joint ventures between the two countries.

"The office should serve to beam the learning from Malaysia and the region back to India. The change happening in Malaysia is remarkable and there is so much to learn from Malaysia," he said.

CII, in a statement, said that the opening of the office was a result of the commitment given at the Malaysia India Business Forum last year in presence of Prime Minister M Mahatir of Malaysia and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Speaking at the inaugural function, Jamshyd Godrej, past president CII and chairman of the CII ASEAN Committee, said the office would look at strategic areas to increase cooperation between the two countries to strengthen and build CII partnership with its partners in Malaysia including the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers among others.

Addressing the NAM Business Forum, CII Director General Tarun Das mooted a seven-point agenda for cooperation among NAM countries including setting up of a NAM Business Council.

Identifying corporate governance as an area of focus, Das said there should be cooperation among regulatory organisation and structured cooperation on trade policy.
