London-based NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul's Caparo Group on Friday announced a tie-up with the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University of the US to establish a university near Delhi.
The university will provide degrees in information technology, management and bio-medical engineering programmes.
The campus will be located on a 21-acre site acquired for the project by the Caparo Group in Greater Noida, according to Ambar Paul, director of the Caparo Group, who is also a trustee of the Carnegie Mellon University, rated among the top 20 universities in the US.
Ambar Paul, who became the first Indian and the youngest-ever trustee of Carnegie Mellon University four years ago, said after a meeting with the Greater Noida authorities that the new university will start functioning from next year after a full-fledged feasibility study is conducted.
The total cost on the project is expected to be around Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million). The Caparo Group has already acquired the land and money would be raised from corporates and alumini of the Carnegie Mellon, he said.
Paul said that initially the new university will provide professional masters level degrees and executive educational programmes.
The first courses will be offered in IT and will include software engineering, networking, security and e-financing to be followed by MBA and bio-medical engineering.
Students will be offered full Carnegie Mellon degrees with a period of study at the US campus, he said.
Caparo and Carnegie Mellon would jointly appoint the board of trustees, administration and faculty for the Indian campus.
Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh is regarded as one of the world's top research-based universities. Its School of Computer Science is ranked among the top institutions of its kind in the world and its robotics institute is the largest such research facility in the US.
