Inviting Canadian entrepreneurs, India has said the country is fast emerging as an attractive destination for investors in various sectors especially in energy, information technology and biotechnology.

"The potential for further Canadian investment in India is enormous," Satish Mehta, Consul General of India said addressing a function organised by South Asians in Ontario to commemorate 58th anniversary of India's independence.

He said that India was rewriting new rules of business and providing major investment opportunities to foreign companies to invest in oil and gas, and other forms of energy, mining, construction, transportation, telecommunications, environmental technologies, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and information technology.

"India is being redefined in a positive manner by the world. It is no more a country of snake charmers. The opening up of the Indian economy to foreign investment, advances in science and technology, particularly in high-tech sector have created a climate that has made the country extremely attractive to foreign investors," he said.

"Two million cell phone subscribers are being added every month. It is amazing, and shows that India is one of the very promising new emerging markets," Mehta said.

Speaking on the occasion, Leon Benoit, member of Canadian Parliament, praised India's contribution to the world.

He said India community in Canada was playing a great role to expand trade and commercial relations between the two countries.
