Canada has decided to open its consulate in Chandigarh, the first outside the four metropolises, by April 2004. The city was chosen for the fifth consulate because over 45 per cent of Indian immigrants to Canada were from Punjab, said Canadian High Commissioner to India Peter H Sutherland.
Sutherland was in the city to promote business ties with India. He said on the priority list Canada had slotted India next to the Group-8 nations.
He said a pact to co-produce films, television and animation programmes between India and Canada was on the cards. Canada was keen to nurture ties with Punjab business community.
The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry said Punjab could offer skilled manpower to Canada.
