Public sector telecom giant BSNL has introduced the location-based services, which includes the service that helps track the place from where the call is made to BSNL phone, in the North-East.
"We shall explain our scheme, especially the people finder service to the police and health departments as these would be of immense help to them," said AK Gupta, Chief General Manager Telecom, NE-I Circle, at a media conference in Shillong on Saturday.
"With the help of this service, the exact position of people can be tracked at any given moment, provided they too subscribe to BSNL," Gupta said.
The location of the mobile user would be displayed on the screen, provided they are within a specified limit, he added.
"This facility would be of help to crack mobile theft, besides being useful for mobile users to locate, monitor and communicate with their buddies," he said. It also enables users to add location, dimension and content to their personal communication.
The LBS package includes people finder service, dating, chatting, resource tracking and management service and a host of other facilities.
"CellOne mobile phone users can also create buddy list and groups, locate, monitor and communicate among friends, family and employees," Gupta explained.
He said mobiles can be even fixed to vehicles after which they could also be easily tracked.
The chatting' scheme provides an 'SMS chat' service to subscribers who would like to communicate or meet, based on their current location.
"They can specify the distance (km) and duration within which they want to find their buddy to chat. It enables people of the same interests to meet. The subscriber provides personal profile information including gender, interests, nickname, etc," Gupta said.
