BSNL to be on guard against pvt telcos

June 05, 2006 11:54 IST

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has asked its offices across the country to be on their guard against private service providers who use incorrect information to project the PSU as responsible for delays in providing points of interconnect.

This comes in the wake of BSNL facing increased criticism from private service providers who have accused it of failing to provide points of interconnect in time, resulting in increased congestion in the country's cellular network.

In a communication to all its circle heads, the PSU said, "unfortunately, an attempt is being made to create a misconception and incorrect perception to the effect that BSNL is trying to delay direct connectivity for its cellular services even at those places where it has been found feasible. Efforts are being made to create an impression that despite having the required infrastructure and facility, BSNL is not taking the necessary steps for achieving direct connectivity for its cellular services".

It added that such attempts at spreading misinformation needed to be looked at in light of facts and ground realities.

The communication has reiterated that all "circles should keep in mind that any such effort on the part of anyone to spread wrong information should not be allowed to succeed" while adding that circle heads must project the correct data and information to counter the private operators' campaign.

The PSU has reminded all its offices that the telecom tribunal has dismissed petitions of private operators against BSNL's levying transit charges of Rs 0.19 paise per minute for its cellular services, while asking its circle heads to recover these dues from Tata Tele and Reliance Infocomm.

BSNL has said that upon achieving direct connectivity, there would be no requirement for payment of transit charges by any private cellular operator to it.

"The obligation remains upon the private service operators to set up transmission links and complete all other requirements for achieving direct connectivity to BSNL," it added.
